What are Power Amps?

Power amps

Power amplifiers are dedicated amplifers which provide power to one or more speakers in a HiFi or AV environment.

They take the signal from an AV Receiver or Processor through XLR's or RCA cables.

Power Amplifiers typically have significantly more power available to each channel than an AV receiver and subsequently provide better control of the drivers which in turn provides faster, tighter and more controlled sound in the room.

Please note that you can only use a power amplifier if you have the correct outputs on your pre-amp or AV reciever. You need pre-outs to allow the connection from your av reciever or pre-amp to the power amplifier.

How do they connect?

Power Amplifiers connect to your AV Receiver/Processor via Pre-Out Connections

Pre-outs are volume controlled sources that are connected normally to a power amplifier, in most systems people use RCA cables to connect the two together (see here our RCA cables) but for higher quality and cleaner sound we recommend that you use XLR's where this is an option on your processor. When using pre-outs the AV reciever will have the connected speaker load removed to the power amplifier, meaning the remaining speakers connected to the AV receiver will have more power/current avaialble - allowing them to better fill the room with tighter, more controlled output.

How Many Channels?

The amount of channels you can process depends on your AV reciever/processor.

Similarly, the amount of pre-outs on the back determineshow many channels you can power via a power ampifier.

Most of our customers start of with a 2-channel power amp for the front left and right speakers or move up to a 3-channel for front left right and centre. These 3 channels are the ones which take the most power from AV recievers so when you take this load away, the other channels get much more power.

Our Range of Power Amplifiers

AV Processors with Pre-Outs

All AV Processors have pre-outs on the back of them as this is the way they connect to power amplifiers, wether its through RCA (unbalanced) or XLR (balanced). In some cases like on the back of the Lyngdorf MP-40+60 and all of emotivas they only have XLR outputs.

Balanced has a lot less risk to unwanted noise, while unbalanced audio can pick up unwanted humming and buzzing but most of the time the unwanted noise isnt really noticable.
